They will ask you about the Ruh. Say: ´The Ruh is my Lord´s Command and the knowledge you were given was but very little. [Surah al Isra 17, verse 85]

Meaning of the Ruh (Soul)

Allamah ibn Atheer al Jizri (606) writes the Quran and Hadith mentions about the ruh in many places.  The word is used for many items.  However the main purpose that this word is used for is to describe the way the body has life due to the soul.  The word is also used for Quran, Wahi (revelation), Mercy of Allah and Hazrat Jibreel (as). [An Nahaya vol 2 Pg 246 – Beirut]

Allamah Meer Syed Sharif Jurjani (816) writes the ruh is of transparent nature which has knowledge and comprehension (ability to understand).  The ruh is originated from Alam-e-Amr (The Divine World).  Humans are not able to understand the reality of the ruh.  [Altariphaat Pg 82]

Allamah Qurtubi has written that the ruh is from Alam-e-Amr and that besides Almighty Allah no one has knowledge of this.  Some scholars say that Alam-e-Amr is that place where Almighty Allah creates by the Command of Kun (Be).  Alam-e-Khalq (Created World) is where Almighty Allah’s creation is from the world of matter eg soil, Water, Air etc.

His command when He desires a thing is just to say to it, ´Be! and it is. [Surah Ya Sin 36, verse 82]

Does the noble Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) have knowledge of the Ruh

Allamah Badar-Uddin Ayni Hanafi (855) says that the status of the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) is of such immense quality that it cannot be possible, that he had no knowledge of the ruh.  How can it be possible, that he is the Habib of Almighty Allah, the Master of the Universe, and besides Almighty Allah has blessed and informed the noble Prophet of ALL things, for in the Quran we learn..

…. Allah has sent down the Book and Wisdom to you and taught you what you did not know before. Allah´s favour to you is indeed immense. [Surah An Nisa 4, verse 113]

Shaykh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dhelvi (1052) has written there is no evidence from the Quran that Almighty Allah did not bestow the knowledge of the ruh to the noble Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him).  It is my opinion and more authentic to believe that the knowledge was given to the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) but he was not commanded to inform the people.  Especially how can possible a momin (believer) have this doubt when the noble Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) is Syed-ul-Mursaleen and Imam-ul-Arifin who Almighty Allah has granted knowledge of his own Zaat and Sifaat as well as all knowledge of all the past and future.  So how can someone doubt he would not possess knowledge of the ruh.  The knowledge of the ruh is like a drop in the ocean compared to the total knowledge the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) has.  [Madaar-e-Jun-Nabuwah vol2 pg 41]

The Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) said: “..I acquired knowledge of ALL on the earth and heavens when Almighty Allah placed His Hand in between my shoulder blades...” [Tirmidhi Sharif - part of a longer hadith]

Hadith e Noor

Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the noble Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) said: “….From my noor Allah created the the soul of the Anbiyah and Rasul’s.  The soul of the Anbiyah breathed and from that breath Allah created the soul of the Auliyah, Shuhadah (martyrs) and the righteous people…..”  [Musannaf Abd-alRazzaq]

Remember when Allah made a covenant (agreement) with the Prophets saying: ´Whatever I give you of the book and wisdom, there will then come a Prophet who confirms what is with you; you must all believe in him and help him.´ Allah asked: ´Do you agree and accept the responsibility that I have given to you?’ They replied: ´We agree.´ Allah said, ´Then bear witness that I am also with you among the witnesses.  [Surah al-Imran 3, verse 81]

Creation of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him)

When I have formed him and breathed My Ruh into him, fall down in prostration in front of him!  [Surah al-Hijr 15, verse 29]

When your Lord took out all their descendants from the loins of the children of Adam and made them testify against themselves ´Am I not your Lord?´ they said, ´We testify that indeed You are!´ Lest you say on the Day of Resurrection, ´We knew nothing of this. [Surah al Araaf 7, verse 172]

The above verse is a confirmation of the existence of our Soul prior to its union with our physical body. This verse is referring to the time when the progeny was taken out from the loins of Adam (as) all at once to take the covenant. The testimony and affirmation by our Soul, before Almighty Allah, is also acknowledged.

The Soul in this World – just a few thought provoking questions!

- Can the soul meet other souls in a dream?

- Can the soul whilst in a dream meet another soul of a person who is still alive?

- Can you meet or see the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) whilst in a dream?

- Can you meet the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) whilst awake?

Allah takes back people´s souls when their death arrives and those who have not yet died, while they are asleep. He keeps hold of those whose death has been decreed and sends the others back for a specified term. There are certainly Signs in that for people who reflect. [Surah az Zumar 39, verse 42]
